Smooth shells are normally used for fine crushing. Both rolls may be smooth or one roll may be smooth and the other step-toothed or corrugated.
Step tooth rolls are used for medium or coarse crushing. Both rolls may be step-toothed or one roll may be step-toothed and the other smooth.
Corrugated rolls are also used for medium or coarse crushing and may also be operated in pairs or one roll may be corrugated and the other smooth.
This type employs large teeth, either in rows or randomly across the roll. The teeth drag the particles in the crushing chamber and crush them against a breaker plate. These are used as primary breakers for gypsum, very soft limestone, and other "crumbly" materials, such as coal.
This is the most popular type of roll crusher. It works very much like the wringer on an old style washing machine. The material is squeezed out between the rolls, crushing primarily by compression.
This type is a dual roll crusher with a third roll attachment, making it a 2-stage crusher.
The twin dual crusher is essentially two crushers within one frame. It has a pair of coarse crushing rolls on one side and a set of fine crushing rolls on the other. The same shafts are used with both sides of the crusher.
